Beautiful Data About Horrible Things: Slave Trade Edition

I just recently ran across this Emory University database about the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

It includes several maps detailing the geographical features of the slave trade, such as this map detailing from where how many slaves came from:

You can also search their database of thousands of documented slave ship voyages, as well as make custom graphs, such as this one, which charts the percentage of slaves who died en route by the number of days the journey took:

You can spend quite a lot of time playing with this - a belated thanks to Emory for helping explain the gargantuan size of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
