Babycrat Update - Parenting is Awesome, and Really Hard

Such a happy baby! Most of the time, anyway ...

Since (at least some of) my reading public asked for a Babycrat update with pictures, I wanted to take a moment to oblige, and to reflect briefly upon my first three months of fatherhood.

First off, that's the Babycrat above - she's super cute, isn't she? ;)

For the most part, she's also a very happy, well-behaved baby. The one big challenge we have is getting her to sleep on her own ....

For some reason, I'm reminded of that famous quote from Anna Karenina:

"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." -Leo Tolstoy

Personally, I'm hoping for a boring, happy family - I'd much rather have that than a unique, unhappy family.

For anyone looking for a little more baby cuteness, here's a badly-lit, shaky home video of the Babycrat and Papa (me, the Angry Bureaucrat), as we have actually taken far more videos of her in the past few weeks than photos:

My apologies in advance for the home-quality of the video and my generally unshaven state - due to an office quirk, I'd been working from home for a few weeks straight, and since I only shave out of social convention and otherwise find shaving quite irritating and burdensome, I was looking far more grizzled than usual. Oh well. Also, you may notice I'm speaking in German to my baby - yes indeed, I'm doing my best to raise a bilingual baby. We'll see if I have the discipline to stick to it.

Actually, I think I'll save most of my actual reflections for a separate blog post I've been mulling over for a few days and plan on writing and posting soon. For now, I'll just give a short update - after taking her three months off, my wife is now heading back to work, and I'm starting my own 6-8 week parental leave. I've not been blogging much the past couple of weeks because the transition has been rather hard for all of us - the baby is definitely not onboard with this whole Mom-going-back-to-work idea. But, nevertheless, for now I'm at home taking care of the baby for a while, and I will either have more or less blogging time than normal, depending on how the baby is managing the transition.

So, that's the news from here - back with more soon.
